One of Urd's flying, talking brooms falls in love with Belldandy and accompanies her and Keiichi into town.

Summary

The flying broom that Urd recently lent to Belldandy one day not only can speak and move on its own, but it has fallen in love with Belldandy. He professes his love for the goddess right before Urd catches him in the act. She is already aware that the broom wants to ask her to make him a human, and she tells him that she can't do so because he is already "maxed-out" magic-wise since he can talk and even conjure his own magic spells. Frustrated, the broom runs off to Skuld's room and tells her his plight, and Skuld offers to attach a bunch of spare Banpei attachments to him to make him look human.

The broom flees again but runs into Belldandy and Keiichi in the halls. She thanks him for helping her and wonders what kind of token of appreciation she should give him. The broom wants Belldandy to hold and walk around town with him, but he thinks that would be too embarrassing for her. Keiichi is surprised that the broom can talk, but the broom gets jealous of his presence and angrily tells him that he, Stringfellow Hawke, is the world's greatest flying broom, but he suddenly gets an idea.

Belldandy and Keiichi set off to go shopping downtown, and Hawke has requested that he tag along and have Keiichi hold him the whole time. Keiichi wonders why he had to hold the broom, but Hawke reminds Keiichi that he owes him a favor from earlier. Keiichi attempts to mount Hawke, but the broom immediately throws him off because only Belldandy (and Urd) may ride him. Their argument is interrupted by a mailman dropping off a letter who witnesses Hawke talking, but he is too stunned to make any fuss over it.

Keiichi gets weird stares from people as he travels with Belldandy and Hawke on a train into town. There, Belldandy leads them into a bakery, but the owner doesn't want Keiichi bringing that "filthy old broom" into his clean bakery. Hawke argues with the man before they go back outside, where Belldandy tells them to wait while she goes to get something. There, Keiichi tells Hawke that he knows he is in love with Belldandy, and Hawke tells him that he's aware that he's just a broom, but he still hopes he can have the privilege of Belldandy using him to sweep the floor... of all things. Belldandy soon returns and puts a tiny ribbon and dress over Hawke. Keiichi thinks Belldandy is brilliant, assuming that she wanted to make it look like they just bought Hawke and make it look less suspicious, though Belldandy just thought it would look cute on him.

The three of them continue shopping and eventually stop to let Keiichi try his hand at a claw machine, though he's unable to get what he wants. While Hawke sits next to Belldandy, he wonders why he feels deepening despair instead of joy. He asks Belldandy why he was born as a broom instead of a human, where he could be as carefree as Keiichi. Keiichi overhears Hawke and sympathizes with him before remembering to read the letter he got in the mail. Belldandy tells Hawke that both sorrows and happiness for anyone who's ever lived, and that they only met because they were created exactly as they were. Hawke wants to take the chance to tell Belldandy something when Keiichi butts in by showing Belldandy the letter he got. It's from Chihiro, and she wants to talk with him regarding his job offer at the old Motor Clubhouse at 4 PM, and Belldandy realizes it's already 3:50 PM.

While Keiichi isn't too concerned with being late, Belldandy insists on flying him there herself. However, Hawke is aware of how difficult it would be for her to carry another person in the air and volunteers to fly both of them. He accepts that Belldandy will do anything for Keiichi and that as a broom, he will do his best for her as long as she smiles at him back. Belldandy once again thanks Hawke for his help when they arrive at the clubhouse, but when Hawke tries telling her that she's already paid him back a thousand times, he falls asleep before he finishes.

Chihiro finds them outside and as it turns out, the important business that she wanted to discuss with Keiichi was to have him pick between two logos for her new company, Whirlwind; Keiichi picks the left logo. Hawke wakes up and is immediately enamored by Chihiro's beauty, while Urd shows up and suspects he's just girl crazy.

Trivia

  • The name and logo of Chihiro's company Whirlwind is a reference to the Westland Whirlwind, a British twin-engine fighter aircraft that was used during World War II.
